Carrying Forward the Dream
Shri M. Ramachandra Gowda took up the mantle to continue and expand the family’s sericulture vision. In 1988, he had the grainage license transferred in his name and relocated its operations to Bangalore, with ambitious plans to popularize sericulture across the state. Since then, VSSPC has been a pioneer in private-sector silkworm seed production in India, with a legacy spanning over last eight decades.
Trained formally under the Department of Sericulture, he inherited, led and advanced his family’s legacy, becoming a torchbearer for private grainages across India. In 1988, he relocated his father’s humble but trustworthy and popular seed production center from his native Ittasandra, Hoskote taluk, and modernized it into the ultra-modern VSSPC in Bangalore, mastering microscopic quality control and scaling operations of the organisation into the top most private quality egg producer in India by 1994–95.
By then, he had gained expertise in microscopic examination techniques, ensuring the supply of Pebrine-free silkworm eggs to farmers. Despite many challenges that made him contemplate giving up the trade, his determination, the encouragement of the departmental staff, the support of his family & friends has kept him steadfast.
His perseverance bore fruit when, in 1994–95, he emerged as the highest private-sector producer of silkworm eggs in India, gaining recognition for his uncompromising quality standards.
With a strong focus on R&D, training, and farmer support, VSSPC works closely with the Department of Sericulture, Karnataka and Central Silk Board, Govt. of India contributing meaningfully towards Indian sericulture in general and Karnataka in particular.
Through seminars, workshops, and training programs, he inspired countless private graineurs to produce quality silkworm eggs. His thirst for knowledge and innovation led him to visit China (four times), as well as Japan, Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Bhutan, Israel, Egypt, Austria, and the USA, gathering global insights to strengthen India’s sericulture industry.
